Roseanne: Season 2, Episode 5: House of Grown-Ups

Roseanne is now working at a fast food restaurant. With an awesome uniform :)

The kids are excited to have a VCR. Woo, technology!

I love that when Becky is helping Darlene get prettified, they do the same poofifying techniques and Jackie and Roseanne when she had an interview a couple episodes back.

Ohhh, Dan rented a dirty movie at the video store too.

I love Darlene's reaction to hearing how to kiss from Becky.

Mandingo? What does that mean as a nickname?

Jim/Kayte Dan/Roseanne: Dan knows Roseanne is sad in like 2 words, how to men do that sometimes?
Also Dan making her feel better by making her laugh. Jim is really good at that, too <3

Roseanne: Season 2, Episode 4: Somebody stole my Gal

"We could do that trick with the popcorn box..." (dirty!) - Roseanne

Roseanne's new joy: $12/hr working at the construction yard with Dan. In the office, not doing the construction.

Woah, crazy guy telling them how great family is and how lucky they are to have each other. He's a nutter, but it's true. "That guy's a real cheese dog in a hard hat" - Dan

Roseanne: Season 2, Episode 3: Guilt by Disassociation

Roseanne has an interview at a meatpacking plant. And she gets hired! Buuuutttttt, she doesn't know how to use a computer, so she got un-hired. Sad.

And she has spanish speaking friends in Landford. Everyone loves her because she helped them leave Wellman and find other great jobs.

Crystal sells Cindy Lou cosmetics. So cute.

Angry Roseanne is angry, and feels like she let her family down :( Being unemployed is yucky. For reals. But we will endure!

Roseanne: Season 2, Episode 2: The Little Sister

Jackie wants to be a police officer! Going from factory worker to police officer. That's a pretty nice step up. $3000 a month.

Hehe, Dan imitating Julia Child.

oooh, Becky reading Dan's dirty magazines!

Darlene and Jackie bonding about being little sisters. Except that Jackie is depressed and drunk.

Oh, and this is the first Roseanne episode written by Joss Whedon! Yay! This was one of the first things he wrote for TV, or so IMDB tells me.

Dude, I totally want to see Roseanne and Jackie girl fight. This is awesome.

Roseanne: Season 2, Episode 1: Inherit the Wind

And onto Season 2! What fun things do we have in store for us this season? Will the kids grow up more? Will Roseanne find a job after Wellman Plastics?

Becky is dating Jimmy. Roseanne is selling magazines on the phone.

"Why don't you have any money? " - Roseanne
"Well, I did, but I blew it on tube socks for DJ. I hate myself. " - Dan

Becky is tooty fruity! In front of the whole student council. Mwahahaa. "Becky Conner, the only woman to break the sound barrier without a plane. "-Darlene

But all is well, Jimmy still wants to take Becky out even if she toots.
I'm also thankful that my Jimmy still wants to take me out, even if I toot. <3

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 23: Let's Call it Quits

Oh no, no more Booker. Now we have Faber. Played by Fred Thompson! From Law and Order and running for President. And he's an asshole! Just like real life?

Oh good, Booker's still around looking handsome and being slightly douchy.

Quotas to high, boss being misogynistic and assholish.

What the hell are they assembling in Wellman's plastics? Usually it's forks or something. Now it looks like toy cars maybe? Really ugly toy cars.

No one likes Fred Thompson! They all quit, woo!

And with that we've made it though the entire first season! Yay Roseanne!

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 22: Dear Mom and Dad

It's Al and Bev Harris! Roseanne and Jackie's parents.

I love how Bev talks to Roseanne about Dan, while he's sitting there. My grandma totally did that.

The writer's did such a good job with Bev, all the backhanded complements, the talking about one person in front of someone else. It's great.

It's also neat to see Al in the flesh. We hear so much in the future about what a horrible Dad he was, a horrible husband he was, we even meet his mistress after he dies.

Well that was random - the little clip at the end when they are doing credits - in walks Bruce Willis, Roseanne screams, and he hops in bed with her and gives her a hug and kiss. And he's really young.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 21: Death and Stuff

I watched about 5 minutes of "The Talk" on daytime television, and it was crazy to see Sara Gilbert as an adult. Not a Darlene grown up adult, but a real adult. Especially after watching her as an 11 year old for 21 episodes in 3 days.
Have I mentioned that vacations are great?

Oooh, officer mini-mullet.

Hehe, Darlene trying to look innocent after knocking over a dead body.

I like that the officer helps Darlene make Baklava.

It's time! It's time!

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 20: We're not in Kansas Anymore

"Tornado is raw, wild, untamed, what's the word I'm looking for? " -Dan
"George Bush?" -Roseanne

No basement because Dan turned it into a storage locker? But where will Darlene's future boyfriend live?

Is a tornado in Lanford a sign of global warming from 1988?

Whoa special effects! Good times.

Near death experiences = deep thoughts from Dan and Roseanne.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 19: Workin' Overtime

Mmmm pineapple on pizza. My favorite.

With Roseanne working overtime, Dan working late, how will the house function?

I love that Roseanne gets overwhelmed, leaves everything to Dan, and it all gets done. Parallel to Kayte and Jim? yes.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 18: Slice of Life

First her period, then appendicidis. 11 is a busy year for Darlene!

Dr. Bryce! She's the chief from Carmen San Diego!

Uh oh, insurance expired! Even back in the eighties, insurance companies suck. They tried to cancel the Conner's insurance, but really they just spelled their name wrong.

Roseanne: Season 17, Episode 17: Mall Story

I have few comments on this episode. They went to the mall.

I would not buy a dress for a dance that cost $80 unless it was prom. I would buy shoes for $80.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 16: Becky's Choice

Oh Becky,
Getting second holes in your ears, ditching Chip to go to a party with Johnny Swanko. Her first bad boy :)

"You get the door, I'll get the orgy lamp." -Dan

It's funny to watch the Connor's interact with 'middle class' folks.

gancha?

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 15: Nightmare on Oak Street

After watching 14 episodes in 2 days, it really seems like these kids should grow up faster :) I guess years of watching random episodes, it's strange to have more of the real time feel.

"Do you have a headache?" -Roseanne
"No" -Darlene
"A stomach ache?" -Roseanne
"No" -Darlene
"You worried about making the mortgage payment?" - Roseanne

Oh, snap! Darlene got her period.
Dan's reaction: "Good goin' " funniest parental reaction to periods ever.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 14: Fathers Day

The first appearance of Dan's dad, Ed.
And Ed flirting with Crystal.

Ed said that when Dan was three, his wife was 8 months pregnant. I don't remember anything about Dan having a sibling.

Children turning into their parents. So true.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 13: Bridge over Troubled Sonny

A Crystal based episode! Crystal's first husband Sonny died in a construction accident working on The Monument Street Bridge.
As we know from an earlier episode, Crystal had 3 husbands, and her first she married at 18 and was widowed at 19. Because apparently he's buried in the bridge.

Sonny (the bridge hubs) apparently was a womanizer and ran around on her. Like all of Jackie/Crystal's love interests thus far, and every guy other than Dan.

And 11 year old Darlene is trying cigarettes. Eww.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 12: The Monday through Friday Show

Darlene's first job: delivering newspapers, and gets fired. Also, Darlene is 11 years old as of this episode.

Roseanne and Dan decide they want to go on a honeymoon. Jackie decides to take the kids to Wizard World so they have a staycation.

Becky doesn't want to dissect a frog in biology. Such a classic high school kid plot line.

Roseanne: Season 1, Episode 11: Canoga Time

Changing report cards grades by matching red pen. Do teachers ever send grades home with kids? Even when I was in school computerized grade cards came in the mail. These days it's probably all email magic.

And Booker being super douchy. I guess when you look like George Clooney, you can get away with it.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 10: Saturday

I just realized that the actor who plays Dwight - William Sadler was Agent Sloan from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. And he's been on Fringe, and a ton of other stuff too.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 9: Dan's Birthday Bash

Crystal got Dan a scarf with "Four Aces" on it, which is apparently the name of his drywall/contracting company.

Dan almost gets into a fight at the bar, and they mention that 10 years ago, Dan promised Roseanne there would be no more fighting. But then later she gives him permission to punch the guy.

And Becky has her first date ever, with Chip. Apparently the date is having dinner at his house with his parents good time. Crazy times.

Roseanne got Dan a boat anchor for his birthday. So much boat stuffs!

Roseanne: Season 1 Episode 8: Here's to good friends

Boyfriend troubles!
Crystal gets dumped, and Booker is acting fishy.
"You know damn well the way we treat each other has nothing to do with the way we feel. " - Jackie, to Booker

It's funny to hear Crystal talk about what a great catch Dan is, when she's eventually going to marry Dan's pop.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 7: The Memory Game

Roseanne and Dan are sending a picture in for their 15th high school reunion.
Having just had my 10 year high school reunion, it's crazy to think of having 3 kids by my 15th. Although some of my classmates are on their way there.

"That's my favorite dress" - Dan
"You can wear it tonight when we're alone." - Roseanne

Dan went on a date with Phyllis Zimmer in high school when he and Roseanne were on a one week break. And they had the sex! Drama.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 6: Lover's Lane

"There's a 200 point game pulsating through these fingers" -Dan
"Let's not waste it on bowling" - Roseanne

"Here, now don't elope with this" (Roseanne gives Becky $5). Don't worry, she won't elope this season.

Jackie and Booker bet on the game - If Booker wins, Jackie spends the night at his place. If Jackie wins, Booker spends the night at her place, cleaning her bathroom :)
He wins but doesn't collect. D'awwwwww.

Roseanne: Season 1 Episode 5: Radio Days

It's George Clooney again! With poofy hair! Flirting with Jackie :)

Dan writes a country song using Roseanne's old poetry, enters a songwriting contest and loses. It's actually a sweet song.

"There's a river high in the mountain
that's been flowing since who knows when
no ones sure just how it started
but it's never going to end
my love is like that river flowing through all time
heaven knows how I need you, and i'll never change my mind
heaven knows how I love you, and I'll never change my mind. "

IMDB claims that Chris Tucker plays himself uncredited in this episode... not sure where that happened, I missed it. Maybe a radio DJ?

Roseanne: Season 4, Episode 1: Language Lessons

Roseanne/Dan; Kayte/Jim parallel:
Roughhousing, and making bull horns and charging at one another.

Jackie's hair is now straight, which is much less dated looking than the crazy poofy permed hair she had before.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 3: D-I-V-O-R-C-E

Lanford Inn 2 for 1 night!

Patsy (who we never see again) tells Roseanne she got divorced because her husband didn't support her going to college.
Fun parallels of Becky and Mark, with Mark being insecure when Becky wanted to go to college.

Fun thing I love: Parallels between Roseanne and Dan and Jim and I:
Dan talking about Roseanne using his razor to shave her legs. I'd never do that :)
Also just seeing how in love they are makes me happy.

Mythbusters to try: Using an electric heating pad to pop jiffy-pop popcorn. They don't actually show if it would work, I just like the idea of lifehackering popcorn.

1st mention of Roseanne wanting to be a writer!

Roseanne: Season 1 Episode 2: We're in the Money

"I am drywall master of the universe!" - Dan

And Michael Fishman is back as DJ. Yay!

Dan got an advance on a job, and they are able to get caught up on all their bills. $500 advance.
It's interesting to hear them talk about what they'd do with an extra $50 (Submission perfume - Roseanne, captain's bell for boat - Dan).
Then they realize they only have $11 left over, but they both want their fancy stuff. They both get what they want, and they get Becky the designer jeans she wants too.
woo debt!

This really establishes their lifestyle, the 'blue collar' family, which is really a focus on the type of family they are.

Roseanne Season 1, Episode 1: Life and Stuff

So I've decided that I'm going to watch all 9 seasons of Roseanne in order.

Today I've started with episode 1! Original Air Date 10/19/1988 - I was 4 years old :)
I love Roseanne for many reasons. In Season 1 we meet Booker! He's one of the first characters we meet, and he's the manager at the Wellman's plastic factory, where Roseanne, Jackie, and Crystal work. And he's played by George Clooney. A very young looking George Clooney.

Today there's also some strange little boy playing DJ. Sal Borone the internet tells me.

They start out establishing Roseanne's matriarch role in the family. She works at the factory all day, while Dan is underemployed, but Roseanne is still doing the lion's share of the housework, shopping, and dealing with kids.

They have a scene that parallels a much later episode - Roseanne and Dan are arguing about Dan stepping up and doing his share of the work, but when Darlene cuts her finger, he rushes to her aid and fixes her right up.

Later there's an episode about Mark being a good husband to Becky, and doing his fair share, and when Becky cuts herself, he rushes to her aid and fixes her up to.

And Dan talks about his boat, and retiring and floating away with Roseanne, which they talk about quite a bit in the early seasons, but I don't recall going anywhere. That's why I'm watching these again, so I can see if I can remake these connections and see what happens :)

New Years Goals

2009 wasn't so hot. 2010, pretty awesome, so now I'm looking for inspiration to make sure 2011 lives up. I wouldn't quite call them resolutions, but here are my goals for 2011:

  • Learn to do a handstand
  • Use every kitchen gadget I have at least once
